Google Cloud shares temporary privilege elevation design for agents, separating requests, approval and expiry

Google Cloud employees published an article on PAM, showing how agents can work with low privileges and request elevated privileges limited in duration and scope when needed. Human approval, purpose statements and audit records must be implemented in the actual configuration.

Source Facts

On 13 October, Google Cloud published an official community article by product managers and architects explaining how Privileged Access Manager can define eligible requesters, roles, time limits and approvers for people, service accounts or agents.

The article aims to avoid standing elevated privileges by making the agent the requester while external controls enforce authorisation decisions and logging. Some advanced capabilities require separate plans. This is configuration guidance, not evidence that all agents are automatically controlled.

Next Steps for Businesses / Editorial Observations

Agents may request actions, but should not also decide for themselves whether elevated privileges are approved.

Next steps you can take

  • Identify standing privileges in existing AI service accounts and reduce them to everyday requirements.
  • Require time-limited authorisation, independent approval and post-revocation checks for exceptional actions.
